A Severely Decayed Tooth Might Need to Be Completely Restored by a Crown

Posted .

A significant cavity or large area of tooth decay can cause pain and compromise your ability to chew food. In some cases, our Great Neck Dental Care dentist might be able to repair the cavity with a large filling. However, if the area of decay is significant, there might not be enough enamel remaining to anchor a filling. This often prompts Dr. Behnam Moghadasian to recommend restoring the entire enamel layer of the tooth with a crown.

This generally requires two separate appointments. The process begins with Dr. Behnam Moghadasian examining the tooth and taking some X-rays. Assuming the interior structures of the tooth are healthy, he can begin the process of forming an abutment. Dr. Behnam Moghadasian will then remove the majority of the enamel layer of the tooth, leaving the healthy interior of the tooth known as an abutment. This will later serve to anchor the crown in place.

Next, an impression is made of the abutment and surrounding teeth before it is covered by a hard plastic a temporary crown. The impression is sent off to a dental lab that will custom make your new crown. We will call you back in for the second appointment when your crown is completed, at which time Dr. Behnam Moghadasian will remove the temporary crown and cement your new permanent crown in place atop the abutment.

If you have a significant cavity, please call Great Neck Dental Care in Great Neck, New York at 516-717-4729 to have it examined and treated.  Dr. Behnam Moghadasian and our team are always happy to help keep your smile healthy!
